The Space Heater Math Most People Get Wrong (And What It Costs Them)

Every winter, space heaters produce two contradictory stories: “I saved $80 turning down the furnace” and “my bill went up $200 and I don’t know why.” Both are real. A space heater is a tool with sharp edges — here’s the math that decides which story you get.
The baseline number
A standard space heater on high draws 1,500 watts — the practical maximum from a wall outlet. Run 8 hours a day, that’s 12 kWh daily, or about 365 kWh a month. Every 1,500 W heater costs the same to run — the $30 unit and the $150 “ceramic tower with digital thermostat” convert electricity to heat identically. Features buy comfort and safety, not efficiency.
The four classic mistakes
Mistake 1: Heating a room nobody’s in
The heater in the drafty home office, still running during the two hours of meetings you took from the kitchen. A heater without a schedule or thermostat runs at full draw regardless. Fix: use the built-in thermostat, or a $10 smart plug with a schedule.
Mistake 2: Supplementing instead of substituting
The savings case for a space heater is zone heating: drop the whole-house thermostat several degrees, heat only the occupied room. What actually happens in many homes: the central thermostat stays at 70°F and the space heater runs on top. That’s strictly additive — you’re paying the furnace bill plus $40–115/month.
Mistake 3: Fighting a heat pump
If your central heat is a heat pump, it delivers heat at 2–4× the efficiency of a space heater. Displacing heat-pump heat with resistance heat increases your bill even when the zone-heating logic feels right. Space heater substitution only wins against resistance heat (electric furnace, baseboards) or genuinely expensive fuels — or when it lets you keep a large house much colder overall.
Mistake 4: All-night bedroom heating
Eight sleeping hours at 1,500 W is the most expensive comfort in the house — and most safety guidance says don’t run portable heaters unattended anyway. An electric blanket delivers sleeping warmth at about one-tenth the cost; see the head-to-head.
Setups that genuinely save money
- The remote worker: house at 62°F all day, one heater with a thermostat in the office. The whole-house heating you don’t buy usually exceeds the heater’s cost — this is the textbook win.
- The one-cold-room house: rather than raising the whole thermostat because the back bedroom is freezing, fix that room with 750 W on a thermostat.
- The overnight substitution: house drops to 60°F at night, electric blankets handle beds. Nearly all the savings, none of the unattended-heater risk.
Choosing by heater type
Oil-filled radiators are quiet and steady, fan/ceramic units heat fast, infrared panels target people in larger spaces. Cost per hour at the same wattage is identical across all of them — pick by room and noise, not efficiency claims. The low setting (typically 750 W) costs exactly half the high setting, and a thermostat matters more than either.
One rule covers everything: a space heater saves money only when it lets you buy less heat somewhere else. If nothing else in the house changed, its cost is pure addition — and now you know exactly what that addition is.
