How to Measure What Any Appliance Really Uses (For About $10)

Every number on this site is a well-founded typical value — but your refrigerator, in your kitchen, at your settings, has one true number. Finding it costs about $10 and takes a day. Here’s how.
The tools
Smart plug with energy monitoring ($8–15). The modern default. Plug it in, put the device on it, read the app: instantaneous watts, cumulative kWh, often per-day history. Kasa, Tapo, and similar brands are accurate within a few percent — plenty for bill math. Bonus: it’s also a schedule and a remote switch, so the meter is the fix.
Kill A Watt-style plug meter ($20–35). The classic standalone: no app or account, shows watts/kWh on a screen. Fine choice if you’d rather not put your lamp on Wi-Fi.
Whole-house options. Many utility portals already show hourly usage — free and revealing (look for the overnight baseline). Panel-level monitors (Emporia, Sense, $100–300) itemize everything at once; overkill for most, wonderful for data lovers.
What you can’t plug-meter: hardwired 240 V loads — central AC, water heaters, electric furnaces, EV chargers. Those need the utility-portal method (compare days with and without the load), a panel monitor, or our state-adjusted estimates.
How to measure the two kinds of device
Steady or always-on devices (router, aquarium, fridge, media center): don’t trust a 10-second reading — compressors and duty cycles mislead. Leave the meter on for 24–48 hours and read cumulative kWh. Divide by days, multiply by 30.4 and your rate: that’s the monthly bill line. (Rate = your bill’s total ÷ kWh, or your state’s average.)
Session devices (dryer, dishwasher, air fryer, treadmill): reset the meter, run one full normal session, read kWh per session. Multiply by sessions per week × 4.35 for monthly cost.
What to measure first
In rough order of revelation-per-effort:
- The refrigerator — the biggest measurable-by-plug load, and the one where age matters most. A modern unit reads 1–1.5 kWh/day; an old or dying one can read 3–5. This single measurement can justify a replacement.
- The entertainment center, overnight — everything “off,” measure 8 idle hours. This is your phantom-load reality check.
- The gaming PC or home office cluster — people guess these wildly wrong in both directions.
- One dryer load and one dishwasher load — your per-session truth beats any table.
- Anything you argue about — the meter settles marital energy disputes instantly.
Reading the results without fooling yourself
- Watch for duty cycle. A space heater “on high” cycles its element with the thermostat; peak watts ≠ average watts. Cumulative kWh over hours is the honest number.
- Standby counts. A device used 1 hour a day at 100 W but idling at 10 W spends more than half its energy in standby. The 24-hour measurement captures this; spot checks don’t.
- Seasons change answers. The garage fridge in July ≠ January. The dehumidifier’s duty cycle tracks humidity. Measure in the season you’re worried about.
- Compare against expectations. Our appliance pages give the typical range — if your device reads far above it, you’ve found either a settings problem, a failing appliance, or a genuine surprise worth fixing.
