Phantom Load: What Standby Power Really Costs (With Numbers)

Somewhere between 5% and 10% of a typical home’s electricity goes to devices that are nominally off. That’s the phantom load — also called vampire power or standby draw — and while individual devices sip tiny amounts, a modern home runs dozens of them, around the clock, every day of the year.
The math that makes phantoms matter
A single watt of continuous draw uses 8.76 kWh per year — about $1.50/year at the U.S. average rate. That sounds like nothing. But standby loads stack:

A house with a DVR, two consoles on instant-on, an AV receiver, three smart speakers, and the usual kitchen clocks can easily idle at 80–120 watts — 700–1,000 kWh and $120–180 per year in an average-rate state, doubled in California or New England. Always-on intentional devices (router, cameras, NAS) sit on top of that.
Which phantoms to hunt (and which to ignore)
Worth killing:
- Set-top boxes — the single worst offender per device. If you’ve switched to streaming, that idle DVR is pure waste; a streaming stick does the job at 5 W while in use.
- Instant-on / rest modes on consoles — the energy-saver setting typically costs you 10 extra seconds of boot time and saves $15–20/year per console.
- Entertainment clusters — TV + receiver + soundbar + console + subwoofer on one power strip, switched off together.
- Rarely-used devices: the guest room TV, the garage beer fridge (not a phantom, but the same logic — it’s $5–15/month), the printer used monthly.
Not worth the effort:
- Modern phone/laptop chargers with nothing attached — fractions of a watt.
- Anything you’d have to re-program or re-pair daily. Convenience has value; a phantom you’ll actually re-enable in a week isn’t a saving.
- LED clocks. The microwave clock costs $3/year — annoyance-driven optimization ends here.
The 20-minute audit
- Night test: with everything “off” and the fridge briefly unplugged, check your meter — many digital meters show instantaneous watts. That number is your whole-house floor. Under 50 W is tight; 150+ W means there’s a phantom worth finding.
- Room-by-room: anything with a light, clock, or warm power brick draws standby. Note set-top boxes, receivers, subwoofers, and consoles.
- Measure the suspects: a smart plug with energy monitoring reveals each device’s overnight draw.
- Group and switch: power strips (or smart plugs on schedules) for the entertainment center and desk cluster — the two densest phantom habitats.
